Ebrei in Toscana - Jews in Tuscany

Perché una Mostra sui secoli XX e XXI della minoranza ebraica in Toscana?
Perché l’attenzione che, a partire dagli ultimi decenni, si è sviluppata sul tema della persecuzione, dalle leggi razziali alla Shoah, è come se avesse appannato tutto il resto.
Con la Mostra proviamo a raccontare anche gli altri aspetti significativi che legano gli ebrei alla storia di tutti, a cominciare dal ruolo di collegamento che hanno sempre rappresentato con il resto del Mediterraneo ma anche con le altre parti del mondo.
Non solo ebrei nati in Toscana ma anche ebrei arrivati in Toscana da altre regioni d’Italia, così come da altri paesi, uomini e donne che si sono collegati alla compagine che li accoglieva arricchendola e diversificandola.
Abbiamo cercato di cogliere il loro dinamismo nel mondo degli affari, della cultura, della politica. Abbiamo tentato cioè di ridare la complessità di questa significativa minoranza per la storia della nostra regione e per la storia del nostro Paese, attraverso questa Mostra nella speranza di avvicinare anche i non addetti ai lavori.
L’idea progettuale dell’Istituto storico della Resistenza e della società contemporanea di Livorno è stata accolta e finanziata dalla Regione Toscana che ci ha sostenuto sin dalle prime fasi con gli uffici dell’Assessorato alla Cultura.


Why organize an exhibition about the history of the Jewish minority in twentieth and twenty-first century Tuscany? Because the tendency in recent decades to focus on the theme of persecution, from the race laws to the Holocaust, has overshadowed everything else.
Through this exhibition, we hope to describe other significant facets that link Jewish history to history as a whole, starting with the way Jewish communities have always served as bridges to the rest of the Mediterranean, and even other parts of the world.
It’s not just the story of Jews born in Tuscany, but of Jews who came to the region from other areas of Italy, or from other countries; men and women who were welcomed into local communities, enriching and diversifying them. We have tried to capture their vibrant contributions to the worlds of business, culture, and politics.
We have tried, in other words, to convey all the complexity of a minority that has played a significant role in the history of our region and nation, through an exhibition that we hope will spark the interest of the general public.
This project was proposed by the Istituto Storico della Resistenza e della Società Contemporanea in Livorno, and accepted and funded by the Region of Tuscany, which has supported it from the earliest stages of development through its Department of Culture.
