I believe what gives pleasure to a viewer is the seemingly effortless ease of execution. Fred Astaire and Mohammed Ali had it, as did Velasquez, Zorn and Sargent. As in all things, it takes a lot of practice and hard work.
I also like to see brush strokes and marks left on the painting that don’t try to hide the illusion the artist is trying to create. How often have you admired a work only to find, on closer inspection, that it is nothing but slapdash and dribbles; yet when you step back, it all comes together. A quote by Francis Bacon comes to mind: “The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery.” Doug Lew

Ciò che viene apprezzato da un osservatore è, secondo me, l’apparente facilità e fluidità di esecuzione. Fred Astaire e Mohammed Ali ce l’avevano, come pure Velasquez, Zorn e Sargent. Come in tutte le cose, serve molta pratica e duro lavoro.
A me piace anche vedere le pennellate e i segni lasciati sul quadro quando questi non tentano di nascondere l’illusione che l’artista si sforza di creare. Quante volte abbiamo ammirato un’opera solo per appurare, a uno sguardo più attento, che non è altro che una composizione abborracciata fatta di pozzanghere e sbavature; eppure, facendo un passo indietro, tutto torna. Cito una frase di Francis Bacon che mi viene in mente: “Il compito dell’artista consiste sempre nell’aumentare la profondità del mistero.” Doug Lew


Doug Lew was born in Shanghai, China, and moved to the United States at the age of fifteen. After completing degrees in Art and History, he embarked on a successful career in advertising, while at the same time pursuing his vocation as a painter. Praised by critics and treasured by collectors, his watercolors have been displayed at group and personal exhibitions, and have won numerous awards. He is the author of books about watercolor painting, and taught the use of watercolor in architecture at the University of Minnesota. Among his books, it is worth mentioning: Capturing Motion in Watercolor (1987); A Watercolor Journal of Florence (2002); Painting from Life: Explorations in Watercolor (2004); Great Composers in Watercolor (2010). Doug Lew è nato a Shanghai, in Cina, e si è trasferito definitivamente negli Stati Uniti all’età di 15 anni. Dopo aver completato i suoi studi in Arte e Storia, ha goduto di una carriera di successo nel campo della pubblicità, e allo stesso tempo ha coltivato la sua vocazione come artista. Lodato dai critici e coccolato dai collezionisti, Doug Lew ha esposto in mostre sia collettive sia personali in tutto il paese, vincendo numerosi premi. È l’autore di vari libri sulla pittura ad acquarello, ed ha insegnato la tecnica dell’acquarello in architettura presso l’Università del Minnesota.
