Hernani

Pietra miliare nella storia del teatro e della cultura francese, bersaglio della critica accademica e nel contempo ideale estetico ed esistenziale della turbolenta gioventù romantica, Hernani è opera che vuole infrangere una tradizione e perseguire l'innovazione in tutti gli aspetti della teatralità: tematiche, linguaggio, psicologia dei personaggi, scenografia, recitazione; di volta in volta esaltata o stroncata, questa pièce provocatoria rimarrà come esempio di una straordinaria rispondenza fra questioni letterarie e culturali da un lato, politiche e sociali dall'altro, che contrassegnarono un'epoca.
"Le romantisme n'est que le libéralisme en littérature": da questo principio e da questa definizione prende le mosse la prima significativa realizzazione, in campo teatrale, di una poetica della quale il giovane Hugo si farà il principale portavoce, e che si incarna a perfezione nel personaggio di Hernani.
Tradotto in musica nell'omonima opera di Verdi, riproposto in epoca contemporanea da Antoine Vitez al Théâtre National di Chaillot, Hernani rimane un esempio tipico di quel dramma romantico attraverso il quale Hugo tentò di creare, con maggiore o minore successo, una forma d'arte e di spettacolo che fosse insieme popolare e di qualità.

A landmark for theatre history and French culture, criticised by academics and at the same time an aesthetic and existential ideal for the revolutionary young romantics, Hernani is a play that breaks with tradition and pursues innovation in all aspects of theatricality: themes, language, psychology of the characters, stage design and acting. Acclaimed or criticised, this provocative play is an example of the astounding correspondence that marked an era between literary and cultural issues on one side, and political and social issues on the other side.
"Le romantisme n'est que le libéralisme en littérature" (Romanticism is nothing but liberalism in literature). From this principle and definition, initially in theatre, came forth a new poetics of which Hugo became a major exponent. And it is a poetics perfectly embodied by the character Hernani.
Set to music by Verdi in the opera with the same title, staged in recent times by Antoine Vitez at the Théâtre National of Chaillot, Hernani is a classic example of the Romantic drama through which Hugo tried to create with varying success a form of art and drama both popular and of quality.


Giovanna Bellati is full professor of French Literature at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, where she undertakes research for the Department of Studies on Language, Text and Translation. She also collaborates with the Faculty of Language Sciences and Foreign Literature at the Catholic University of Milan. Her current researches are mainly focused on the literature and culture of the Romantic period, with particular reference to Théophile Gautier as prose writer and drama critic. She has published various articles and essays on the subject besides the recent volume Théophile Gautier journaliste à "La Presse". Point de vue sur une esthétique théatrale (L'Harmattan, 2008)
