Ugo Fontana (1921-1985) è un illustratore fiorentino che ha dedicato tutta la sua opera ai libri per bambini. Ha lavorato, dagli anni Quaranta fino alla sua scomparsa, per i più grandi editori per ragazzi (Fabbri, Mondadori, Marzocco-Giunti ecc.) illustrando in grande formato soprattutto fiabe, molte delle quali per la collana Fiabe Sonore che negli anni Sessanta è entrata nelle case di tantissimi italiani.
Ma oltre alle immagini legate al fiabesco Fontana ha creato illustrazioni anche per romanzi, copertine e libri di divulgazione per ragazzi, come per esempio Grandi Regine, volume di biografie di sovrane dall’antichità all’età moderna nel quale ha attinto, per le proprie tavole, a tutta la storia dell’arte, mirabilmente ripresa e rielaborata nelle sue sofisticate composizioni e nei suoi stupefacenti ritratti.
Con una attenzione specialissima all’infanzia e alla complessità del suo mondo interiore (i suoi bambini sono raffigurati in tutti i loro umori e malumori), Fontana è stato un illustratore straordinario per sensibilità, qualità e quantità di opere realizzate (più di 250 libri), e per la passione con cui si è occupato, ritenendola in assoluto la sfida più alta per un illustratore, sempre e solo di immagini per l’infanzia.
Il recupero e l’analisi della sua opera, in tempi in cui vigono modalità assai più veloci, superficiali e raramente ‘manuali’ di illustrazione, diventa importante per creare confronti, riflessioni, dibattiti sulle direzioni in cui stanno andando, potrebbero o dovrebbero andare le immagini dedicate ai bambini.

Ugo Fontana (1921-1985) was a Florentine illustrator who dedicated his life’s work to children’s books. From the 1940s until his death, Fontana worked for Italy’s major publishers (Fabbri, Mondadori, Marzocco-Giunti etc.) especially producing large format fairy stories, many for the very popular Fiabe Sonore series that practically no Italian home was without in the 1960s. He also illustrated novels, book covers and learning books like, for example, Grandi Regine (Queens) an overview of women sovereigns from ancient times to the modern day. Here, his vast knowledge of the history of art was harnessed to produce sophisticated compositions and amazing portraits.
Fontana’s focus on childhood and the child’s complex interior world (his children are shown in the full gamut of moods), gave his work an extraordinary sensitivity and quality. His dedication to what he considered the greatest challenge – illustrating for children – led him to illustrate more than 250 books.
Returning to examine Fontana’s work in an age where illustration techniques are swifter, more superficial and rarely painstakingly ‘manual’, prompts reflection on the current state of illustrations for children and where they could or should be going.

GIORGIA GRILLI insegna Letteratura per l’infanzia all’Università di Bologna, dove ha contribuito a fondare il primo Centro di Ricerca in Letteratura per l’infanzia in Italia.
Ha scritto numerosi saggi critici sulla letteratura per l’infanzia e nel 2013, in occasione del cinquantesimo anniversario della Fiera del libro per ragazzi di Bologna, ha curato Bologna: Cinquant’anni di libri per ragazzi da tutto il mondo. Bologna: Fifty Years of Books for Children from Around the World (BUP), un doppio volume italiano e inglese con contributi sulla storia recente dei libri per bambini scritti da studiosi di tutto il mondo.
GIORGIA GRILLI teaches Children’s Literature at Bologna University where she has recently helped found Italy’s first Children’s Literature Research Centre.
She has written many critical essays on children’s literature and, in 2013, for the Fiftieth Anniversary of Bologna Children’s Book Fair, she has edited Bologna: Cinquant’anni di libri per ragazzi da tutto il mondo. Bologna: Fifty Years of Books for Children from Around the World (BUP), a double volume in Italian and English containing essays on the recent history of children’s books written by scholars from all over the world.
FABIAN NEGRIN è autore e illustratore di libri per bambini. Ha vinto prestigiosi premi internazionali ed è candidato al Hans Christian Andersen Award e all’Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (considerati i premi ‘Nobel’ della letteratura per l’infanzia).
